Permanent Outdoor Lighting FAQs in Nanaimo, BC

Answers to common questions about permanent outdoor lighting, installation, pricing and everyday use on Central Vancouver Island.

Permanent Outdoor Lighting Basics

What are permanent outdoor lights?

Permanent outdoor lights are low-voltage LEDs installed along your soffits or roofline in a discreet, colour-matched track. They stay in place year-round, and you can change their colours, brightness and patterns from your phone. See how permanent outdoor lighting works on Nanaimo homes.

Are permanent lights only for Christmas?

No. You can use them for Christmas, other holidays or warm-white lighting throughout the year. Unlike temporary strings, you do not have to put them up and take them down each season. Explore our permanent Christmas lights in Nanaimo.

Are permanent soffit lights the same as exterior pot lights?

No. Pot lights are separate fixtures that shine downward. Permanent soffit lights follow the roofline and can provide warm-white accent lighting as well as colours and patterns. If you need strong lighting for a walkway or work area, you may still need dedicated fixtures. Learn more about permanent soffit lighting.

What lighting system does Clear Choice install?

We install Prairie Lighting’s RGBWW system. It combines colour-changing LEDs with dedicated warm-white light, a protective track and app controls. See the parts that make up the Prairie Lighting system.

What do the lights look like during the day?

The LEDs sit inside a low-profile track designed to blend with your soffit or fascia. Want to see the finished look? Browse our gallery of completed lighting projects.

Smart Controls and Nanaimo Weather

Can I control different colours and sections from my phone?

Yes. The app lets you change colours, choose patterns, adjust brightness and set schedules. You can also control different sections of the roofline independently.

Can the lights handle Nanaimo’s rainy winters?

Prairie Lighting’s 30 mm Pro LED pixels carry an IP68 rating. The track and installation also help protect the system during year-round outdoor use. As with any exterior lighting, proper connections and installation matter in a wet coastal climate.

How much electricity do permanent lights use?

Usage depends on the length of your installation, brightness, colour settings and how many hours you run the lights. Dimming them and setting a schedule can help limit electricity use. Our permanent lighting blog has more on operating costs.

Are there monthly subscription fees?

The lighting system does not require a standard monthly subscription. If you want to connect it to an optional third-party smart-home service, ask about that service’s requirements before installation.

Installing Permanent Lights on Your Home

Where are the lights installed, and will my roof or gutters be affected?

The track is typically fitted along suitable soffit or fascia areas. Mounting points and wire routing depend on your home, so we review the planned placement and any work near gutters before installation.

Can you install lights on an existing or two-storey home?

Yes. Permanent lighting can be added to existing bungalows, two-storey homes and more complex rooflines. Height and access affect the installation plan.

Do I have to light the entire house?

No. You can start with the front-facing roofline or choose additional sides and the back. We can help you decide which areas will have the most impact.

How long does installation take?

Many homes can be completed in a day. Larger homes, difficult access and full-perimeter layouts may take longer.

Are permanent lights worth it compared with seasonal Christmas lights?

That depends on how often you decorate and what you spend on seasonal installation. Permanent lights remove the yearly setup and takedown, while giving you lighting you can use beyond Christmas.

LED Lifespan, Warranty and Maintenance

How long do permanent outdoor lights last?

Prairie Lighting’s 30 mm Pro LEDs are rated for up to 100,000 operating hours. That could mean about 25 years of regular nighttime use, although other system components may need service sooner. For a deeper look at what affects their lifespan, read our guide to how long permanent outdoor lights last.

What warranty comes with the system?

1-year workmanship, 10-year parts, lifetime bulbs.

What happens if one LED stops working?

Contact us so we can diagnose the problem. A failed pixel or other serviceable component generally does not mean replacing the entire roofline.

Do permanent lights need maintenance?

You do not need to install and remove them every season. It is still sensible to check for visible damage from time to time and let us know if a light or section stops working.
